Last month I gave you my top tips for choosing safety gear for the job. You all loved it so much I decided to give you more of my favourite workwear for women! This subject is one I am passionate about, with more women deciding to start careers in Safety and other male-dominated fields. Particularly on job sites that can be dangerous, it is important to find workwear that works for you.

Not your grandpa’s coveralls

Wearing coveralls on site used to be a hassle. Not only were they always boxy and oversized, but even if you are a taller woman they always fell long in the arms and legs. This is not just uncomfortable to wear, but can also become a safety hazard for tripping. Like I’ve said before, things are getting better – there is now more variety than ever for women to shop safety gear and workwear designed specifically for them!

Easy, breezy, beautiful Covergalls

Drumroll please…I want to let you in on my personal favourite brand of coveralls – Covergalls! Covergalls is a Canadian brand made for women by women. Their coveralls in particular are my go-to workwear for days I am on site – and here is why:

-They have a 2-way zipper that makes it less awkward to get them on and off.

-They snap at the wrist for added safety. Remember those old coveralls I mentioned, that made it feel like you were trying on your dad’s clothes? Having sleeves that fit shouldn’t feel like a luxury, but those of you on the job like me know it really does make a difference.

-There’s an adjustable velcro waist! This is nice for all body types as it helps keep the coveralls from feeling boxy.

-There are secured pockets, which is key so you can keep your personal items and your gear on you at all times. No more worrying about things slipping out when you’re working.

-Last but certainly not least – they have a “rear opening“. When you’re busy on the job, going to the bathroom should not have to be an entire production. It may not sound glamorous but having this handy little feature will save you from the perils of having to “strip down” for each bathroom trip.

They also come in a variety of colours (I got the Royal Blue) – and in poly cotton fabric or flame resistant. Check out the collection here! This is in no way a paid advertisement, I just genuinely love this brand and use their workwear because it functions well for me in my job as a Safety Consultant.

The importance of a good fit

As a Safety Consultant, I cannot stress enough the importance of a good fit. When we are on site, we can come into contact with dangerous substances or use dangerous tools. Having ill-fitting workwear can cause hazards like tripping. If your sleeves are long they could get caught in machinery as well.

We can often be in risky situations, and it is part of my job to educate workers on how to keep themselves and others safe. The emergence of more safety gear and workwear designed for women’s bodies is helping keep women safe and functional in the workforce.
